The Billboard Art Project: Unleashing Creativity on the Urban Canvas

In today’s urban landscape, billboards often dominate our attention with commercial messages, leaving little room for artistic expression. However, a transformative initiative known as The Billboard Art Project promoted by São Rafael Galleries has emerged, revolutionizing the way we perceive these towering structures.

The Billboard Art Project is an innovative platform that repurposes vacant billboard spaces, transforming them into vibrant urban canvases. By collaborating with local and international artists, this project breathes new life into these static advertising spaces, igniting a creative revolution in the heart of Lisbon.

Its strategic placement in urban areas ensures maximum exposure, allowing art to transcend traditional gallery spaces and reach diverse communities. Belém, Alcântara, Cais do Sodré, Santa Apolónia, Rossio, Avenida, Marquês de Pombal, Campolide, Sete Rios, Praça de Espanha, Campo Pequeno, Entre Campos, Saldanha, Alameda, Telheiras, Benfica, Quinta das Conchas, Cascais, Paço de Arcos, Caxias, or Algés… A true open-air gallery will be available to visit from November 22nd to December 19th. In total, 50 billboards will be scattered throughout Lisbon and along the Cascais line.

One of the project’s core objectives is to provide a platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their work to a wide audience. By utilizing billboards as unconventional exhibition spaces, the project amplifies artists’ messages and gives them an opportunity to connect with the public in a unique way. Abílio Marcos, Amanda Field, Anatoliy Anshin, Aoccho, Ashima Kumar, Catarina Diaz, Cecília Acevedo, Danielle Romaine, Gulnar Sacoor, Keith Grafton, Lena Silva, Leonor T. Sousa, Maite Baron, Marina Emphietzi, Raquel Gralheiro, and Sandmann Corte-real are some of the talented participating artists.

With its mission to redefine the visual landscape of our cities, The Billboard Art Project also positions itself as a powerful tool for social commentary and activism. Artists leverage this unconventional platform to raise awareness about urgent social issues, challenging social norms, and promoting dialogue on matters that truly matter. With billboards acting as giant canvases, these messages become impossible to ignore.
São Rafael Galleries invite art enthusiasts, artists, and urban explorers to join this revolution in the 2024 upcoming exhibition, which already has an open-call. By supporting this initiative, you are contributing to the vibrant transformation of our cities, empowering artists, and amplifying the social messages that shape our society.

EXCLUSIBLE ICONS SHOW MARVEL ROME

EXCLUSIBLE ICONS SHOW MARVEL ROME

The Artbox VR Exclusible Icons premiered in Rome last January 20th. Artbox is an art show nominated at the Iberian Awards’23 in the category of best use of technology, and could’nt be better received in Rome, an evening of art, sharing and innovation at Parvart Gallery in Trastevere. A beautiful show with our wonderful artists Catarina Diaz, Leonor T. Sousa, Arista2099, Abílio Marcos, Ashima Kumar, Lena Silva, Gulnar Sacoor, João Freire, Kwame Koda, Cecília Acevedo, Lilia Luján and many others, surrounded by the work of Giovanni Trimani, exhibition opening on Monday.

Exclusible Icons: immersive experience is a collaboration between São Rafael Galleries, a luxury contemporary art gallery with a focus on immersive and multi-sensory based in Portugal, and Pavart Gallery, a renowned contemporary art gallery in Rome. The show invites you to immerse yourself in an unforgettable 360º journey through contemporary art. In this nocturnal city of millions, Exclusible Icons are sleeping beauties dancing in the light in premium exclusivity… a ticking mystery, the enigma of art invades the Pavart Gallery space. Artworks leap out of their frames and paintings come to life in an immersive virtual reality experience in the historic Monteverde Vecchio district.

In this exhibition, curated by Mónica Kahlo and Sílvia Raposo, São Rafael Galleries has brought together “le primedonne” from its collection of international contemporary artists: Catarina Diaz, Leonor T. Sousa, Arista2099, Abílio Marcos, Ashima Kumar, Lena Silva, Gulnar Sacoor, João Freire, Kwame Koda, Cecília Acevedo, Lilia Luján and many others.

EXCLUSIBLE ICONS (Detailed description)

The Artbox VR: Exclusible Icons exhibition opens with Leonor Trindade Sousa’s abstract expressionist paintings, which last year won 12 awards in Italy, Portugal, Brazil and France. The exhibition highlights Outro olhar, a work awarded with the Artist of the Future’21 Trophy, distinguished by the artist’s expressive talent.

Exclusible icons also has a space dedicated to the theme of symbolism and mythology with Arista2099. Arista2099, inspired by classic and new myths, traces the evolution of the human species and the future we are headed towards, transferring them onto the canvas or into the world of crypto art. We can also revisit some works by Ghanaian photographer Kwame Koda who tells us visual stories through the unique art of conceptual photography. At his side also the Chilean crochet painting artist Cecília Acevedo, who through textile fibers seeks to enhance the sensory experience through the crochet technique, created from botanical threads, hand-dyed with natural pigments.

Walking through several rooms where the works come to life, many other masterpieces are highlighted in this immersive VR exhibition, including the Butterflies collection, by Gulnar Sacoor, which invites you to immerse yourself in the myriad of colors and realistic images of minimalist forms and endless landscapes, among mystery and spirituality; We also discover the London artist Catarina Diaz, through her analogue collages with oil sticks that give visibility to the female figure inspired by the cosmopolitan life of London, by fashion, but also by the memories of a childhood inhabited by the vibrant and exotic chromatism of the ‘West Africa. Alongside it, the works of Lena Silva and Ashima Kumar, both celebrations of the creative and autonomous power of women, with a focus on the strength and spiritual dimension of women. If Ashima’s works juxtapose geometric simplicity with painterly strokes, drawing inspiration from traditional folk art forms and natural motifs, Lena Silva’s artwork can be described as portraiture, figurative with a subtle touch of expressionism.

Alongside the huge 3D projections we also went through the work of Abílio Marcos, whose pictorial language dialogues with expressionism and poetic symbolism, all combined in plays of colors and shapes. Also playing with shapes, the Mexican artist Lilia Luján is presented, whose pieces fall within the figurative-expressionist line, full of allegories with funny characters and elements of nature that acquire expression through color and collage. Finally, with a focus on childhood, we also went through the Affections collection, by the artist João Freire, who seeks, through watercolor and extreme sensitivity, to express the ties that unite parents and children since birth.

Exclusible Icons is a traveling exhibition aimed at an art-interested audience that includes families and visitors of all ages. It’s a beautiful exhibition on Contemporary Art that combines international names with a deep dive into the heart of creativity.

Artbox VR wins Best Use of Technology award in the 7th edition of the Iberian Festival Awards

Artbox VR wins the 7th edition of the Iberian Festival Awards in the Best Use of Technology category (PT). The award distinguishes the best innovative technological solutions in the Iberian Peninsula. The Portuguese project, created by businesswomen Mónica Kahlo and Sílvia Raposo, was presented within the scope of the Books & Movies Festival promoted by the Municipality of Alcobaça. The virtual reality Artbox VR project is promoted by Galerias São Rafael and is a large artistic production that fits in a 30-centimeter technological box. More than an exhibition, Artbox VR is an immersive show in virtual reality. Artworks pop out of their frames and paintings come to life in an innovative 360º experience with image, empathetic sound and interactive video”, accessible in the presentation space or from home via a virtual reality headset. The Artbox VR project now goes down in history together with MBWAY, See Tickets, IDASFEST, PayPal, Place & Tickets, Ticketea and EDP, winners of previous editions.
