Crown of Thorns

The crown of thorns was an instrument of torture used by the Romans during the Crucifixion of Jesus. According to the Bible, this instrument was woven from dry thorns and placed on Jesus’ forehead just before his crucifixion.

2nd Fall

This artwork makes reference to the 2nd Fall, and also to the veil of Veronica, known as Saint Veronica of Jerusalem, who met Jesus when he was carrying the cross along the Via Dolorosa towards Calvary. The bible tells that she took a moment to wipe the blood and sweat from Jesus’s face with her veil, his countenance would have been imprinted on the fabric.

3rd Fall

This work makes reference to the third fall of Christ. According to the Synoptic Gospels Simon of Cyrene was a man who, after the fall of Jesus, was forced by Roman soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus Christ to the end. Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified.

Crucifixion

The crucifixion of Jesus was an event that likely took place between AD 30 and AD 33. This work of art concerns the moment of the crucifixion.
